Intro

The "Open Glossary Digital Commission" project emerged from a collaboration between ACCA (Australian Centre for Contemporary Art) and James Nguyen for his Open Glossary exhibition. This case study delves into the intricate intersection of visual aesthetics and multilingual translations, seamlessly integrating James's vibrant glossary illustrations with cutting-edge design elements. Departing from traditional approaches, the project incorporates James's distinctive 'Stussy S,' replacing the conventional translation arrow and infusing a personalised touch. The exploration utilises Webflow as a web builder, incorporating Finsweet custom attributes for keyword filtering in the queer glossary. The integration of multilingual fonts, including translations by the artist and Google Translate, further enhances the linguistic and artistic dimensions of the project.

Key Points
  1. Visual Aesthetics and Multilingual Translations: The project seamlessly blends vibrant glossary illustrations with innovative design elements, creating a visually engaging and multilingual user experience.
  2. Innovative Design Elements: Drawing inspiration from Google Translate's user-friendly interface and the sleek organisation of tab folders, the website serves as a dynamic platform for linguistic exploration and reflects James's artistic finesse.
  3. Personalised Touch: The incorporation of James's distinct 'Stussy S' in lieu of the traditional translation arrow adds a unique and personalised dimension to the user interface.
  4. Technical Implementation: Utilising Webflow as the web builder and leveraging Finsweet custom attributes, the project implements advanced functionalities for keyword filtering in the queer glossary.
  5. Multilingual Typography: The use of fonts supporting multilingualism showcases various translations, with some provided by the artist and others generated through Google Translate.
  6. Collaborative Effort: Crafted through collaboration with James, Shelley McSpedden (Curator), and Rowan McNaught (Digital Technician), the project exemplifies the convergence of design innovation and artistic expression in the online realm.
